Romancing September Across the World – Day 3 – Linda Lee Williams

Good morning everyone! I want to welcome you to the 2nd part of Day 3 of the 3rd Annual Romancing September Across the World Blog Tour. If you haven’t checked out Rosie’s post from earlier, then go by https://rosieamber.wordpress.com/ and get caught up.

Now on to today’s featured author, Linda Lee Williams.

Here’s the question I asked:

What has been the biggest inspiration for your writing?

While I was growing up, I read a lot of science fiction and fantasy.  I was hooked on shows like “The Twilight Zone” and “The Outer Limits.”  Later, I consumed novels by LaVeryle Spencer, Nora Roberts, and Belva Plain as well as Stephen King, Dean Koontz, and John Jakes.  These authors inspired me in different ways, but they all had one thing in common: The ability to tell a good story and make me suspend my disbelief.  When I started writing in earnest, I strove to develop the same skills.  Even though I still don’t measure up, they helped me set the bar higher.

LINDA-L Williams

Here’s a little bit about today’s author:

Linda Lee Williams writes “contemporary romance with a paranormal twist.”  Her stories revolve around imperfect characters, their families and friends, and a host of life issues.  Currently, she has four published novels and is part of a short-story anthology.

After moving to Denver from Chicago, Linda taught creative writing classes and formed a writers’ group.  An outdoor enthusiast, she enjoys hiking, biking, and birding.  She loves critters of all kinds.  During her journeys she’s called Maryland, Virginia, Illinois, Missouri, and Colorado home.  Wherever she roams, she finds inspiration in her surroundings.

Romancing September Across the World – Day 2 – Helen Hollick

Good morning everyone! I want to welcome you to the 2nd part of Day 2 of the 3rd Annual Romancing September Across the World Blog Tour. If you haven’t checked out Rosie’s post from earlier, then go by https://rosieamber.wordpress.com/ and get caught up.

Now on to today’s featured author, Helen Hollick.

Here’s the question I asked:

What has been the biggest inspiration for your writing?

Hmm a difficult question to answer. I think I would say ‘the Past’.

I don’t mean individual people – all those famous (or infamous) names we meet in history books, nor do I mean the events of the past –  the battles, the politics, the things those famous people did or did not do… The past is much more than this. For me, for you, for everyone the past is part of us because of the years that have gone by – yesterday, last year, last century and the ones before that. I don’t mean reincarnation or anything spiritual, but each and every one of us is connected to our ancestors who lived there in the past. We are connected to what has been through our grandmother and grandfather’s grandmothers and grandfathers.

One of my historical fiction novels is about the events that led to the Battle of Hastings in 1066. I know that my ancestors were alive in that year, I have no idea who they were, where they lived, what they did – whether they were directly involved or not… but I do know that at least two of them, a man and a woman, (or a boy and a girl) were alive then.

How do I know?

Because if they were not I would not be here today. My DNA is connected to their DNA and the past lives on through it, through us.

Helen Hollick

Here’s a little bit about today’s author:

I have always loved reading – and writing. I wrote stories as a young teenager, never believing I would one day be a published author.
I just so love bringing my imagined characters alive – to me they are very, very real – especially my pirate, Jesamiah Acorne!

‘Helen Hollick has it all! She tells a great story, gets her history right and writes consistently readable books!’ (Bernard Cornwell)

My Lost Kingdom Series – I AM THE CHOSEN KING (HAROLD THE KING is the UK title of the same book) and its prequel, The FOREVER QUEEN (A HOLLOW CROWN is the UK title of the same book) tells the story of the twilight years of Anglo Saxon England before the Norman Conquest.
Stripping the Norman propaganda from what we think we know of that most famous date in English history – 1066 and the Battle of Hastings, my novels portray all the honour and dignity that history remembers of its fallen heroes.

I am also co-scriptwriter for the UK movie 1066 which is in development.

Sea Witch Book Description

The Time : The Golden Age of Piracy – 1716.

The Place : The Pirate Round – from the South African Coast to the sun drenched Islands of the Caribbean.

Escaping the bullying of his elder half-brother, from the age of fifteen Jesamiah Acorne has been a pirate with only two loves – his ship and his freedom. But his life is to change when he and his crewmates unsuccessfully attack a merchant ship off the coast of South Africa.

He is to meet Tiola Oldstagh an insignificant girl, or so he assumes – until she rescues him from a vicious attack, and almost certain death, by pirate hunters. And then he discovers what she really is; a healer, a midwife – and a white witch. Her name, an anagram of “all that is good.” Tiola and Jesamiah become lovers, but the wealthy Stefan van Overstratten, a Cape Town Dutchman, also wants Tiola as his wife and Jesamiah’s jealous brother, Phillipe Mereno, is determined to seek revenge for resentments of the past, a stolen ship and the insult of being cuckolded in his own home.

When the call of the sea and an opportunity to commandeer a beautiful ship – the Sea Witch – is put in Jesamiah’s path he must make a choice between his life as a pirate or his love for Tiola. He wants both, but Mereno and van Overstratten want him dead.

In trouble, imprisoned in the darkness and stench that is the lowest part of his brother’s ship, can Tiola with her gift of Craft, and the aid of his loyal crew, save him?

Using all her skills Tiola must conjure up a wind to rescue her lover, but first she must brave the darkness of the ocean depths and confront the supernatural being, Tethys, the Spirit of the Sea, an elemental who will stop at nothing to claim Jesamiah Acorne’s soul and bones as a trophy.

Day 2 of Romancing September Across The World Blog Tour

Image

Welcome to Day 2 of the Romancing September Across The World Blog Tour. The question I put out to all of these authors was “What challenges do you face in writing romance in today’s society?”

Don’t forget to go over to Rosie Amber’s page and check out her page too. I’ll put the link at the bottom of this post.

Today my guest author is E. L. Lindley. A big thanks to E. L. for blogging with me today. Here is a little about E. L.  and her book Family Ties.

What Challenges do you face writing romance in today’s society?

I think the romance genre is having a bit of a renaissance period at the moment, where romantic fiction is no longer considered less credible than other genres and it’s become an umbrella for many sub-genres within it. As both a reader and writer, I think this can only be a good thing but there are still lots of challenges facing writers of romantic fiction. Ironically, not least because of the way the genre has diversified and grown which in turn makes it much more difficult to find your niche. The potential romance audience is huge but it’s never going to be possible to please everybody. For example, the burgeoning popularity of erotica has had an impact on romance. Lots of readers now expect much more explicit bedroom action whilst there are many others who prefer stories that leave the more graphic intimacy to the reader’s imagination. Consequently, I write the kinds of books I’d want to read and hopefully there are lots of readers out there with similar taste.

My own preference is for stories that are character driven and another challenge I face is to create characters that are credible and relevant in today’s society. I feel a massive sense of responsibility to create strong, independent female characters that will empower women readers. Female friendship is very important to me and all of my novels feature a cast of supportive, sisterly women. If a woman is cast in a somewhat villainous role, I ensure that the reader can understand her motivations for acting badly. I hate the way women can so often be represented as ‘bitchy’ or manipulative for no other reason than they are female. As a society, I feel we need to be reinforcing as many positive images of women as possible. Having said that, I am equally as committed to creating men who are more than the traditional, stereotypical romantic hero and I hope my leading men are as believable as the women in my stories. If I don’t fall in love with my hero as I’m writing then I know something’s not right. My male characters are basically men who I want to go out with.

In keeping with relevant characters, I also try to include themes that modern women can relate to such as, adoption, family break-ups, commitment issues etc. I enjoy stories where the characters embark on an emotional journey that sees them end up a better person than when they started. After all isn’t that what life is all about, trying to be the best human beings that we possibly can?

Biography

E.L. Lindley is an indie writer and general lover of books in all of their forms. She has written numerous contemporary novels, including the Georgie Connelly series as well as standalone novels. When she is not writing, she is devouring the works of other writers and is delighted by how indie publishing has thrown open the world of publishing. She sees it as a win win situation, allowing writers to publish their work, whilst providing readers with a richer and more varied choice.

Lindley has always loved writing but produced her first full length novel, Business As Usual, when she decided to move on from her career as an English teacher. She now supplements her writing by working on a free-lance basis. This also affords her time to travel and she has been fortunate enough to have travelled extensively throughout the world, using her experiences as a source of inspiration for her writing.

She currently resides in Sheffield in the UK but has lived and worked in many places including, London, Oxford, Southampton, Cheltenham and Brighton. She also studied for a couple of years at the University of Arlington in Texas and has consequently made many extended trips to the USA to visit and stay with friends. Her novels reflect this and tend to incorporate both sides of the Atlantic.

Lindley writes in a style which is both light-hearted and fun but with serious undertones, often tackling gritty subjects. In all of her novels, the characters reflect her belief in humanity and the fact that the human spirit will always prevail, regardless of the situation. Lindley’s primary goal is to entertain people but she is happy to take any response that she can get.

Romancing September

As I’ve been telling you, Rosie Amber has partnered with me to host a dual blog across the pond. I’m really excited about this. We’ve finally received all 30 authors and are on the way to production.

Everyday in September we’ll be doing two blogs. One on Rosie’s page at

http://rosieamber.wordpress.com/ and one on this one.

Why not do a blog regarding romance? Everyone loves a good romance, so why not get to know some of the authors behind the romance. It’s been interesting meeting all these wonderful authors. Several I already knew through blogs, their books and Facebook.

It’s amazing the places these authors come from. I will not give away very much, but I will say this, we have them from all over. Interesting to say the least.

Here the link to Rosie’s list of authors that will be center stage each day of September. So mark your calendars and don’t forget to check out both sides everyday.

Book Description:

Do you believe in soul mates?

William Grafton had the perfect life with his lovely wife, Sara, and two teenaged children. But one day his perfect forever was shattered when Sara died suddenly, leaving him alone to raise his children and wonder how he would ever get through life without his soul mate. Five years later, he finds himself looking into a familiar pair of blue-green eyes that remind him of Sara. The woman is the exact opposite of his late wife, yet he finds he is drawn to her. But after a few strange occurrences, he begins to wonder–are these just coincidences or has his Sara come back to him as she once promised in the form of this new woman?

Annie Paxton doesn’t believe in soul mates or fate. She had watched her father die of a broken heart after her mother passed away and has since cast away any fairy tale ideas of love. Then she meets the man who has been haunting her dreams and she begins to see love in a whole new light. But her dream man is still tied to his deceased wife, and Annie doesn’t know if he will ever be able to break away from his past. As strange occurrences unfold, Annie wonders if William could ever truly love her for herself and not for the traits that remind him of Sara.

Were William and Annie brought together by fate, coincidence or by Sara keeping her promise?

***

Book Excerpt:

Sara looked up at him, the man she’d spent almost half her life with, the man she knew she’d spend forever with. His wavy black hair was damp from the shower, curling gently at his temples and neck. He wore it longer than fashion dictated these days, and she liked it on him that way. She always had. She placed her hand on his chest and snuggled up next to him. He felt warm and smelled of soap and shampoo. He felt good.

“They still need me more than they think, even at their ages,” she said into his chest.

William wrapped his arm around her shoulders. “From what I heard today, they don’t appreciate you as much as they should,” he said gently, adding softly, “None of us do.”

Sara smiled appreciatively. It was rare for William to acknowledge all that she did. She knew he appreciated it all and depended upon her completely. He worked long hours at his business, as well as putting in several more hours each night at home, and her being available to the kids twenty-four hours a day made it easier for him. He never had to worry about being home at a certain time, who’d feed the kids, who’d pick up the dry cleaning or who’d fill the refrigerator with groceries. It was all done, magically, quietly, completely, by Sara. Holidays, birthdays, vacations, everything was planned by her and her alone. And she loved doing it. But it did make it feel all the more worthwhile when he acknowledged the work she put into family and home.

“You know, you’ve spoiled us all,” William continued, pulling her even closer. “We would be completely lost without you.”

Sara pulled away and looked up at him, her expression serious. “Then it’s a good thing none of you will ever know what that’s like,” she said with certainty.

He smiled. “How can you be so sure?”

“I just know,” Sara said. “Even if something happened to me, I’d still find a way to be here for you and the kids. That’s how strong our bond is.”

William looked at her, half-amused, half-skeptical, making Sara laugh softly.

“Oh, Billy,” she said, calling him by the nickname of long ago that only she still used. “I’ve told you a thousand times, we’re soul mates. We were together before we met, we’ll be together long after we’re gone. And even if we cannot be together for a time, I’ll find a way to make sure you and the kids are happy and cared for, one way or another.”

It was William’s turn to laugh, not unkindly. He loved her artistic ways in everything she did. Especially in the way she viewed love and life.

“You are forever the romantic,” he told her, kissing her gently on the forehead. “And I hope you’re right.”

Sara raised her lips to his, and they kissed, soft and sweet at first, then turning warm and passionate. Soon they were naked in each other’s arms with a passion that only years of loving one person can bring, and Sara once again showed him just how sweet forever could be.
