What has been the biggest inspiration for your writing?

Places I’ve lived and people I’ve met.

Here’s a little bit about today’s author:

  Bethan Darwin

Bethan Darwin was born in Toronto but brought up in the Rhondda Valleys in South Wales. She studied law at King’s College London and worked as a solicitor in London for a number of years before eventually returning to Wales in 1998. Bethan works full time as an employment and boardroom law solicitor at law firm Thompson Darwin.

Bethan also runs the women’s networking group Superwoman which raises funds for various charities through its events. In 2009 she was shortlisted for the South Wales Chamber of Commerce Woman in Business award and for Red Magazine’s Red Hot Woman awards in the mentor category. She is listed in the Lawyer Magazine’s Hot 100 Lawyers in the UK for 2010.

Bethan always said she wanted to write a book some day but it wasn’t until she was about to hit forty and while on maternity leave with her second child that she actually got round to sitting down and doing some writing. Her first novel Back Home was published by Honno in March 2009 and her second novel Two Times Twenty in October 2010. She is currently working hard to get a third novel finished in time for publication in July 2016.

Romancing September Across the World – Day 22 – Hilda Vaughn

Good morning everyone! I want to welcome you to the 2nd part of Day 22 of the 3rd Annual Romancing September Across the World Blog Tour. If you haven’t checked out Rosie’s post from earlier, then go by https://rosieamber.wordpress.com/ and get caught up.

Now on to today’s featured author, Here’s the question I asked:

What has been the biggest inspiration for your writing?

I have always been fascinated by women’s historical fiction and when I read this I really wanted to see it back in print again. Vaughan has been neglected in critical terms and this is a very sophisticated, well-written and thoughtful novel. The frustrations Laetitia faces in 1866 must have resonated very strongly with readers in 1926 when women were still fighting to get the vote on equal terms with men (that didn’t happen, of course, till 1928). And I think they still resonate with us today when we still face discrimination even if it’s not so blatant– we can identify with her desire for both more freedom and a romantic love affair.

Here’s a little bit about today’s author:

Diana-Wallace editor of Here Are Lovers

Born in Builth Wells, Hilda Vaughan (1892-1985) published eleven novels, two plays and a number of short stories, the majority of which are set in Wales. This new edition of Here Are Lovers (first published in

1926) includes an introduction by Diana Wallace, Professor of English Literature at the University of Glamorgan.

 Book Description

‘A little tragedy… of two races and two traditions.’

When the beautiful and bookish squire’s daughter, Laeti tia Wingfield, meets impoverished would-be scholar Gronwy Griffith, it seems as if both their romantic dreams could come true. But in the turbulence of

1866 and the Second Reform Bill, the gulf between rich and poor is all but impassable, and as Gronwy is the son of a Welsh farmer, a tenant of Laetitia’s Anglicised father, any relationship between the two seems doomed. As personal and political attitudes harden on both sides, events begin to veer dangerously out of control.

In this ironic analysis of the dangers of romanticism, Hilda Vaughan captures the tedium of life for a Victorian young lady and explores the tensions between class, gender and nationality in this divided Welsh and English society.

Romancing September Across the World – Day 21 – D.E.L. Connor

Now on to today’s featured author, Here’s the question I asked:

What has been the biggest inspiration for your writing?

My biggest inspiration comes from my experiences and childhood. Most of my book ideas evolve from something that happened, or I witnessed in my life. In fact, the Spirit Warriors series evolved from Native American legends I learned growing up in Montana, and from the Alabama Coushatta tribe here in Texas. The adult romance books I am writing were inspired by my nursing career! I have to write about it since only my nursing friends let me tell them about my day at the office. LOL

Here’s a little bit about today’s author:

D.E.L. Connor

Della Connor (D.E.L. Connor) was born in South Dakota and raised in Southeastern Montana where she acquired a keen appreciation for Western and Native American culture. She moved to Texas as a young adult and acquired her honorary Texan status. She became a registered nurse, a nurse practitioner and eventually earned her PhD in nursing. She still works as a nurse educator and as a nurse practitioner. Her nights and weekends, however, are filled with her stories and books. Her first book, “Spirit Warriors:The Concealing,” was published by Booktrope Publishing in November of 2014. The second book in the series “Spirit Warriors: The Scarring will be available July 21, 2014. The Spirit Warriors series will consist of five books and a prequel.
The Spirit Warriors story evolved from a short story she wrote for a college English class in the early 1990’s. The professor read it, loved it and asked her to stay after class and discuss it. During this discussion, he told her that a “dark” story like hers, that was written for older children, would be unmarketable and unsaleable. The story kept floating around in her mind. Finally, J.K. Rowling, Stephenie Meyers and others stepped forward with amazing “dark” stories to create a new genre called Young Adult. The time was finally right for her book. She wrote book 1 in two weeks. It took another year and a half and about a 150 queries all with an “not interested” for her to find a publisher. She found Booktrope and as they say, it’s all history.

 Book Description

“Do you want to spend your life like Golden Flower pining away for the love you lost? Can you imagine how hard it is to be left behind when everything you loved has left?” ––Emmeline Rima Belrose, The Burning (Book 3)

In the third book of D.E.L. Connor’s magical coming of age Spirit Warriors series, Emmeline and her friends find themselves still reeling from the loss and pain caused by the evil spirit, machayiwiw- but the danger is far from over. As Emme, Charlie, Bets, Ollie, Jack and their beloved Spirit Animals prepare for the final battle against the machayiwiw, Emme struggles with a battle within her own heart. She longs for the beauty and softness she feels around Charlie, but she can’t deny the burning passion that consumes her with Jack. Will she finally let Charlie go and give her heart to Jack?

Enthralling and passionate, Spirit Warriors brings the vibrant American West to life once again and whispers its ancient secrets of love and friendship.

Romancing September Across the World – Day 20 – Sonya Loveday & Candace Knoebel

Good morning everyone! I want to welcome you to the 2nd part of Day 20 of the 3rd Annual Romancing September Across the World Blog Tour. If you haven’t checked out Rosie’s post from earlier, then go by https://rosieamber.wordpress.com/ and get caught up.

Now on to today’s featured author, Here’s the question I asked:

What has been the biggest inspiration for your writing?

Sonya:

That’s a pretty tough question for me because I can’t pinpoint one thing. There’s so much to be inspired by. It’s everything and nothing…oddly enough. In the case of Love Always, Candace and I had talked about working on a book together since 2009 when we first started out writing. It took about 6 years to bring that idea into reality. But where did we start, and what were we going to write about? Candace had talked of trying her hand with contemporary romance, but wasn’t sure if taking on another genre was the right move for her. Not to mention she’s still working on a paranormal romance series that keeps her very busy. She’d mentioned to me prior to my last release of If Ever I Fall ( book 3 of my Six Series) that she still wanted to write a book together. She’d just wrapped up Everlost (book 3 of The Night Watchmen Series) leaving us both a moment in the in between to really think about making a co-written book a reality. Two months later, the book was written. That still blows my mind. We finished our book two months and one day after we started it…wow. The inspiration for that came from something Candace had typed up one night when she couldn’t sleep, making it the tip-off of what is now Love Always, and one of the main characters, Maggie, and her basketball orange, colored hair. So yeah, inspiration is everywhere. You just have to stand still, breathe in the moment and it will find its way to you.

Candace:

Inspiration. Gah, how I love it. I mean… honestly, I couldn’t have said it better than Sonya. It’s never one thing. It could be a picture, or a lyric, or a dream I had. It could be a passing thought. And sometimes it’s not always there. Some days I sit in front of my computer wanting to write, but never really feeling it, while others I can’t stop the ideas flowing. I think once you open yourself up to your inner child and step away from the fear of sounding ridiculous, you can think up anything you put your mind to. Every person is different, and I didn’t have one big inspiration that pushed me to write. Except for maybe the fact that I just wanted to have my thoughts on paper. A way to express my views on life in a way that a reader could enjoy. A way to express myself in a way that could be heard. That, I suppose, was my big inspiration.

Love Always

 Book Description

Love Always,

I’ve met boys like him before. Rich. Bored. Always wearing a silver-spooned smile. But there is something different about him that piques my curiosity. The way he looks at me, like he is staring through the bars of a gilded cage he’s never left. Like he is one breath away from suffocating beneath a mound of responsibilities. He is different from the rest because he doesn’t wear his money… his money wears him. I just don’t think he knows it yet.

She’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before. She’s everything I’ve never been able to be. Carefree. Whimsical. A dreamer. Her laugh is infectious. She is irresistible. I can’t help but be drawn to her with an intensity that steals my breath and muddles my senses. I want to know her, need to know her, but how can I

allow myself that liberty when I don’t have the freedom to make my own choices?

Phillip and Maggie think they have it all. Even though they come from opposite backgrounds, they each have bright futures paved out, with no distractions holding them back.

Until the fateful day they meet each other.

After a brief, adventurous time together in The Hamptons, Maggie and Phillip find themselves saying goodbye just as the spark of love flashes intensely between them. Can their budding connection be enough to survive the pulling tides of change, or will they drift apart before they even have a chance to explore what could have been?

Some years ago I became ill and could no longer work as a teacher. I decided to try to write a book. That decision has resulted in a wonderful journey and learning experience. I have met many inspirational people who have helped me. Their interest in my stories kept me going while I struggled to learn and keeps me going still as I work to improve my skills. There has never been a time when I thought I would give up. The stories are there in my head and show no sign of going away. While I can, I will write and I will love every minute of it.

What has been the biggest inspiration for your writing?

I love to read. It is my favorite pastime. I spent decades devouring books, meeting memorable characters who made me laugh, cry and fall in love and I decided in my late thirties that I wanted to write my own stories. So, I’m really inspired by wonderful writing.

Changed to

My children. For years, I kept journals and wrote poetry to express myself, but I never took it a step further. When I had my children, I developed this great fear of dying and leaving them before they were grown. This fear inspired me to write my first full manuscript. I loved the process so much, I kept writing and haven’t stopped.

Now, through my love of reading, great writing inspires me to keep going.

Both Sides of Love

 Book Description

Twenty-one-year-old Lizzie Adler had everything a young woman could want: she was beautiful, bright, and had both a fun and faithful best friend and a handsome boyfriend with whom she was deeply in love. In one fell swoop, calamity strikes, stripping Lizzie of all that she holds dear.  While driving with her best friend, Nan, en route to a party, Lizzie collides with another car.

The results are devastating: Nan doesn’t survive the accident, while Lizzie is forever crippled and disfigured.  Lizzie undergoes scores of surgeries and endures ample physical therapy, which ultimately leave her with a face and body she can no longer recognize.

Meanwhile, Daniel has just recently left Lizzie to stay with his ailing grandparents in England.  He intended to return to her arms after just one summer. Little did he know that, after months of silence from his beloved, he would receive a cold, curt break-up letter, devoid of explanation.

Unable to bear the pain brought on by memories of who she used to be, Lizzie casts her former identity aside forever and decides to go by the name of Beth.

Fast forward twelve years, and Beth is now an almost-happily-married stay-at-home mom with a five-year-old daughter, Stacy.  Boredom and pressure from her husband, Alan prompt Beth to join Stacy’s school’s PTA.  There, she meets Noreen: the first woman she is able to connect with since Nan’s death so many years ago.  Beth is delighted to have finally found someone with whom to face the travails of womanhood.

Unfortunately, friendship with Noreen comes at an unexpected, and painfully high, price.

Funny, candid, and full of surprises, Both Sides of Love is a must-read for anyone who has ever loved, lost, and loved again.

Now on to today’s featured author, Here’s the question I asked:

What has been the biggest inspiration for your writing?

I would have to say my origins. My ancestors (three generations back) were from India; I grew up in a country considered part of Africa and where every major race and religion co-exists in harmony; I am a Muslim woman in the modern world; I’ve known globalisation from a very young age and have been open to the world for as long as I can remember. I am a melting pot – and this is what inspired my writing. My stories are melting pots of regions, cultures, traditions, world-views; where characters from every walk of life befriend each other and show the diversity of the world in race, religion, culture, but also showcase that at the heart of it, we’re all, despite our differences, just people striving for the same goals.

Here’s a little bit about today’s author:

Zee Monodee

Author, editor, smitten wife, in-over-her-head mum to a tween boy, best-buddy stepmum to a teenage lad, bookaholic, lover of all things fluffy & pink, chronic shoeaholic, incompetent housewife who’ll prolly always fail at making domestic goddess status…

Zee hails from the multicultural, rainbow-nation island of Mauritius, in the southern Indian Ocean, where she grew up on the figurative fence–one side had her ancestors’ Indian and Muslim culture; the other had modernity & the global village. Upon realising she could dip her toes into both sides without losing her integrity, she found her identity.
This quest for ‘finding your place’ is what she attempts to bring in all her stories, across all the genres she writes. Her heroines represent today’s women trying to reconcile love, life, & relationships in a melting pot of cultures, while her heroes are Alpha men who often get put back into their rightful place by the headstrong women she writes. Love is always a winner in her stories, though; that’s a given.

Emotions are the biggest inspiration when it comes to writing. Every time I go for a walk in the city gardens, I observe people. There are so many different faces, each telling their own story by their eyes, their expressions, their body language. Every face screams a story in my head. With a cup of coffee in hand, and observant eyes, I sit under a tree with a note book and pen in hand, ready to let my imagination soar high in the sky, thinking of what the story could be behind the face.

Romancing September Across the World – Day 14 – Nicky Wells

Good morning everyone! I want to welcome you to the 2nd part of Day 14 of the 3rd Annual Romancing September Across the World Blog Tour. If you haven’t checked out Rosie’s post from earlier, then go by https://rosieamber.wordpress.com/ and get caught up.

Now on to today’s featured author, Here’s the question I asked:

What has been the biggest inspiration for your writing?

Gosh, Stephanie, there’s a question and a half. I don’t even know how to begin to answer it. Trust me, I just consumed two cups of coffee and a half a packet of biscuits (okay, I admit it, I scoffed the lot!), while pondering your question, and I’m still no closer to an answer. Everything inspires me; the briefest snippet of conversation overheard on a bus, an ad on the telly, something one of the kids said or did, gossip from my friends: a writer’s inspiration is just about everywhere, and anything can spark the idea for a book. One of the books I have in the hopper right now was conceived on a bus while I was thinking about people and nine-to-five jobs. Dolly Parton’s classic film sprang to mind, a celebrity made an appearance in my head, and a plot screamed at me to be written down. Tragically I had no pen or paper, so I had to type the whole thing into the ‘note’ section on my mobile phone.

So you see, inspiration is everywhere, and anything can act as a writing prompt. But if you’re asking me why I write, now that’s a different question. I write, because I can’t not. It’s a simple necessity to me, like breathing or drinking water. Partly it’s my way of escapism. You know how people read to take a break from their real lives? Well, I write for that same reason. I write myself an alternative reality, and quite often I see myself in my leading lady’s starring role. (But don’t tell anyone—I might be embarrassed to admit this!). And partly I write because that’s how I make sense of real-life events. Don’t get me wrong, my books are all fiction; but they are also a way of analysing, exploring, and quite possibly improving (in a fictional kind of way) real events out of my own life. My husband always tells me I’m never happier than when I have a book on the go, and he’s probably right. I simply love spinning a good yarn!

Todays featured book is “7 Years Bad Sex”. If you haven’t checked out the her book, then here’s a little about it and where to find it.

7 Years Bad Sex Nicky Wells

A seven-years-bad-sex curse? Surely not! Yet something went wrong when rock singer Casey and drummer Alex got married on that beautiful yacht anchored off St Tropez in the south of France. Something went badly wrong. For even on their wedding night, the young couple discovers a complete and somewhat surprising inability to make love. Muddling through their honeymoon with a string of thin excuses for their predicament, the lovers defer finding a solution (and panicking) until the return to their home in London. After all, they married for life and to make rock music, not for the love of sex. Right?

But when they resume life as normal in London, all hell breaks loose. Increasingly frantic in their quest for release, the unhappy newlyweds embark on a string of hilarious and occasionally harmful antics that drives them, their band, and an assortment of random strangers to the brink of despair. But it ain’t over ‘til it’s over or, in this case… it ain’t over ‘til the newlyweds sing.
