Romancing September Across the World Blog Tour – Day 10 Lizzie Lamb

Good morning everyone! I want to welcome you to the 2nd part of Day 10 of the 3rd Annual Romancing September Across the World Blog Tour. If you haven’t checked out Rosie’s post from earlier, then go by https://rosieamber.wordpress.com/ and get caught up.

Now on to today’s featured author, Here’s the question I asked:

What has been the biggest inspiration for your writing?

I would say, without doubt, the excellent literature/history based education I received, and movies and books I have read. I become so immersed in them that when I’ve finished I want to rush back to the keyboard and start writing something of my own. It goes without saying that I am referring to the good examples of both genres. Although, if I watch a bad movie or read a poorly constructed book I find myself mentally editing and re-writing them. Anyone else do that? Overall, however, the biggest inspiration for me is – myself! That’s not as vainglorious as it sounds . . . Because of other commitments, I started my writing career later than I would have liked – and I have years of lost time to make up. That’s what spurs me on, allied to the success I’ve had self-publishing my novels. Life is finite and I want to feel at the end of it that I’ve written the books I want to write and have done my very best. As I say on my website, life is not a rehearsal, if you have a dream – go for it.

Here’s a little bit about today’s author:

Lizzie Lamb

Life is not a rehearsal
If you have a dream – go for it.

After teaching her 1000th pupil and working as a deputy head teacher in a large primary school, Lizzie decided it was time to leave the chalk face and pursue her first love: writing. She joined the Romantic Novelists’ Association’s New Writers’ Scheme, honed her craft and wrote Tall, Dark and Kilted (2012), quickly followed a year later by Boot Camp Bride. Lizzie loves the quick fire interchanges between the hero and heroine in the old black and white Hollywood movies, and hopes this love of dialogue comes across in her writing. Although much of her time is taken up publicising Tall, Dark and Kilted and Boot Camp Bride, she has published a third novel SCOTCH ON THE ROCKS and started research for number four. Lizzie is a founding member of indie publishing group – New Romantics Press. In November 2014 they held an Author Event at Waterstones High Street, Kensington, London the icing on the cake as far as they are concerned – and a fitting way to celebrate their achievements. As for the years Lizzie spent as a teacher, they haven’t quite gone to waste as she is building up a reputation as a go-to speaker on the subject of self-publishing.

With Scottish, Irish, and Brazilian blood in her veins, it’s hardly surprising that Lizzie Lamb is a writer. She even wrote extra scenes for the films she watched as a child and acted out in the playground with her friends. She is ashamed to admit that she kept all the good lines for herself. Luckily, she saves them for her readers these days. Check out her reviews, they speak for themselves.

LIZZIE HAS BEEN SHORTLISTED FOR THE NEW TALENT AWARD AT THE PRESTIGIOUS UK FESTIVAL OF ROMANCE. SHE WAS NOMINATED FOR THE OPENING CHAPTERS OF BOOT CAMP BRIDE.

Romancing September Across the World Blog Tour – Day 9 F.J. Thomas

Now on to today’s featured author, F.J. Thomas

Here’s the question I asked:

What has been the biggest inspiration for your writing?

Real life experiences! I’ve always said the horse industry is like a soap opera, and the rodeo industry even more so! Being a competitor and a judge, my life connects with so many people and stories that wind up in my books as pieces of characters or plots. It’s a great life and it’s definitely fueled my writing more than anything else.

Here’s a little bit about today’s author:

FJ Thomas

A cowgirl at heart, F.J. Thomas resides in east Tennessee on her horse farm with her husband Steve and their menagerie of horses, cats, and dogs. Working full time in the healthcare industry, F.J. spends the rest of her time judging open horse shows and competing in anything from huntseat to barrel racing and ranch events every chance she gets.

F.J. started writing in high school and never looked back. She’s written articles that have appeared in America’s Horse and Hoofbeats. Her real life pursuit of the cowgirl lifestyle has provided plenty of first-hand experience and inspiration for writing.

Romancing September Across the World – Day 8 – E. L. Lindley

Good morning everyone! I want to welcome you to the 2nd part of Day 8 of the 3rd Annual Romancing September Across the World Blog Tour. If you haven’t checked out Rosie’s post from earlier, then go by https://rosieamber.wordpress.com/ and get caught up.

Now on to today’s featured author, E. L. Lindley

Here’s the question I asked:

What has been the biggest inspiration for your writing?

Without a doubt the biggest inspiration for my writing has been reading. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t love to read. The local library was my second home as a child and I can still remember the sheer joy of being given access to places and people that were not a part of my everyday life. Reading, I’m certain, gave me the impetus to travel and meet people. That’s why it makes me so sad that reading is on the decline amongst young people. I work in schools and I meet so many teenagers who have never read a book and I think this is reflected in their lack of aspirations and perhaps more importantly lack of empathy. It seems to me no coincidence that, as people read less; our society seems to become less tolerant and more prone to violence. Schools in the UK are not allowed time on the curriculum to invest in reading as everything is so exam driven and this to me is where everything has gone wrong. Literacy and emotional skills are so poor that people can’t communicate with each other effectively. Reading for pleasure is seen as a waste of time, when in fact it enriches our lives inestimably. I like nothing better than to lose myself in someone else’s story and I particularly like stories that are part of a series. I suspect this is because it really does start to feel like there is this whole alternate world that you can immerse yourself in. That’s what I aim for in my own writing. If I can draw someone in and keep their mind off the stresses and strains of their own life for a couple of hours then, for me that’s a job well done.

Here’s a little bit about today’s author:

E.L. Lindley

E.L. Lindley is an indie writer and general lover of books in all of their forms. She has written numerous contemporary novels, including the Georgie Connelly series as well as standalone novels. When she is not writing, she is devouring the works of other writers and is delighted by how indie publishing has thrown open the world of publishing. She sees it as a win win situation, allowing writers to publish their work, whilst providing readers with a richer and more varied choice.
Lindley has always loved writing but produced her first full length novel, Business As Usual, when she decided to move on from her career as an English teacher. She now supplements her writing by working on a free-lance basis. This also affords her time to travel and she has been fortunate enough to have travelled extensively throughout the world, using her experiences as a source of inspiration for her writing.
She currently resides in Sheffield in the UK but has lived and worked in many places including, London, Oxford, Southampton, Cheltenham and Brighton. She also studied for a couple of years at the University of Arlington in Texas and has consequently made many extended trips to the USA to visit and stay with friends. Her novels reflect this and tend to incorporate both sides of the Atlantic.
Lindley writes in a style which is both light-hearted and fun but with serious undertones, often tackling gritty subjects. In all of her novels, the characters reflect her belief in humanity and the fact that the human spirit will always prevail, regardless of the situation. Lindley’s primary goal is to entertain people but she is happy to take any response that she can get.

Here’s the question I asked:

What has been the biggest inspiration for your writing?

– Personal experiences have given me a lot of inspiration. But the biggest inspiration has been observing life and love around me and having my heart so filled that it needs an outlet. Poetry has been that outlet.

Here’s a little bit about today’s author:

Pamela Beckford

I started writing poetry in 2013 and haven’t stopped since. It is still hard to think of myself as a poet (or a writer), but I am.  I find that writing poetry has been a great release for me. I have been a non profit executive for over 15 years and am passionate about my job, even though it is extremely demanding. I have one grown daughter and an adorable young grandson who live way too far away from me.

Here’s the question I asked:

What has been the biggest inspiration for your writing?

The biggest inspiration for me is music or sound. A lyric can set me on a writing binge or even the crack of lightning can put me in a paranormal mood. I love a good storm to write to.

Here’s a little bit about today’s author:

V.Steele

  1. Steele is an author with romance on the brain. She spans several romance genres from contemporary to historical to paranormal. Most of her writing is more for the over 18 crowd. Steamy romance and gorgeous men fill the words coming from her fingers.

Here’s the question I asked:

What has been the biggest inspiration for your writing?

My love of the island where I live, most probably. Jersey is very pretty and although the island is only nine by five miles in size there is a huge social buzz in the island with a lot happening here like boat shows, the Battle of Flowers, an annual air show, Jersey Live/Groove de Lecq/Folklore music festivals and this year at the end of September the island is holding its first literary festival where I’ve been asked to give a talk, I can’t wait. We’ve also got our very own local hero, Superman. Well, the actor Henry Cavill is from the island and comes back often. I’ve seen him walking through town and my sister met him when she was out with a friend recently. (He’s very similar in looks to Sebastian Fielding, the hero in my second book, A Jersey Affair).

Here’s a little bit about today’s author:

Georgina Troy Author jpeg

Georgina Troy lives in Jersey, an island fifteen miles off the coast of France. She’s a hopeless romantic, always falling in love with heroes real and imagined. Jersey has so much scope for stories, with beautiful wind-swept beaches and intriguing inhabitants, and when Georgina realised that no one else wrote romances set there, she decided she had to provide some. Now on to today’s featured author, Linda Lee Williams.

Here’s the question I asked:

What has been the biggest inspiration for your writing?

While I was growing up, I read a lot of science fiction and fantasy.  I was hooked on shows like “The Twilight Zone” and “The Outer Limits.”  Later, I consumed novels by LaVeryle Spencer, Nora Roberts, and Belva Plain as well as Stephen King, Dean Koontz, and John Jakes.  These authors inspired me in different ways, but they all had one thing in common: The ability to tell a good story and make me suspend my disbelief.  When I started writing in earnest, I strove to develop the same skills.  Even though I still don’t measure up, they helped me set the bar higher.

LINDA-L Williams

Here’s a little bit about today’s author:

Linda Lee Williams writes “contemporary romance with a paranormal twist.”  Her stories revolve around imperfect characters, their families and friends, and a host of life issues.  Currently, she has four published novels and is part of a short-story anthology.

After moving to Denver from Chicago, Linda taught creative writing classes and formed a writers’ group.  An outdoor enthusiast, she enjoys hiking, biking, and birding.  She loves critters of all kinds.  During her journeys she’s called Maryland, Virginia, Illinois, Missouri, and Colorado home.  Wherever she roams, she finds inspiration in her surroundings.

Romancing September Across the World – Day 2 – Helen Hollick

Good morning everyone! I want to welcome you to the 2nd part of Day 2 of the 3rd Annual Romancing September Across the World Blog Tour. If you haven’t checked out Rosie’s post from earlier, then go by https://rosieamber.wordpress.com/ and get caught up.

Now on to today’s featured author, Helen Hollick.

Here’s the question I asked:

What has been the biggest inspiration for your writing?

Hmm a difficult question to answer. I think I would say ‘the Past’.

I don’t mean individual people – all those famous (or infamous) names we meet in history books, nor do I mean the events of the past –  the battles, the politics, the things those famous people did or did not do… The past is much more than this. For me, for you, for everyone the past is part of us because of the years that have gone by – yesterday, last year, last century and the ones before that. I don’t mean reincarnation or anything spiritual, but each and every one of us is connected to our ancestors who lived there in the past. We are connected to what has been through our grandmother and grandfather’s grandmothers and grandfathers.

One of my historical fiction novels is about the events that led to the Battle of Hastings in 1066. I know that my ancestors were alive in that year, I have no idea who they were, where they lived, what they did – whether they were directly involved or not… but I do know that at least two of them, a man and a woman, (or a boy and a girl) were alive then.

How do I know?

Because if they were not I would not be here today. My DNA is connected to their DNA and the past lives on through it, through us.

Helen Hollick

Here’s a little bit about today’s author:

I have always loved reading – and writing. I wrote stories as a young teenager, never believing I would one day be a published author.
I just so love bringing my imagined characters alive – to me they are very, very real – especially my pirate, Jesamiah Acorne!

‘Helen Hollick has it all! She tells a great story, gets her history right and writes consistently readable books!’ (Bernard Cornwell)

My Lost Kingdom Series – I AM THE CHOSEN KING (HAROLD THE KING is the UK title of the same book) and its prequel, The FOREVER QUEEN (A HOLLOW CROWN is the UK title of the same book) tells the story of the twilight years of Anglo Saxon England before the Norman Conquest.
Stripping the Norman propaganda from what we think we know of that most famous date in English history – 1066 and the Battle of Hastings, my novels portray all the honour and dignity that history remembers of its fallen heroes.

I am also co-scriptwriter for the UK movie 1066 which is in development.

Sea Witch Book Description

The Time : The Golden Age of Piracy – 1716.

The Place : The Pirate Round – from the South African Coast to the sun drenched Islands of the Caribbean.

Escaping the bullying of his elder half-brother, from the age of fifteen Jesamiah Acorne has been a pirate with only two loves – his ship and his freedom. But his life is to change when he and his crewmates unsuccessfully attack a merchant ship off the coast of South Africa.

He is to meet Tiola Oldstagh an insignificant girl, or so he assumes – until she rescues him from a vicious attack, and almost certain death, by pirate hunters. And then he discovers what she really is; a healer, a midwife – and a white witch. Her name, an anagram of “all that is good.” Tiola and Jesamiah become lovers, but the wealthy Stefan van Overstratten, a Cape Town Dutchman, also wants Tiola as his wife and Jesamiah’s jealous brother, Phillipe Mereno, is determined to seek revenge for resentments of the past, a stolen ship and the insult of being cuckolded in his own home.

When the call of the sea and an opportunity to commandeer a beautiful ship – the Sea Witch – is put in Jesamiah’s path he must make a choice between his life as a pirate or his love for Tiola. He wants both, but Mereno and van Overstratten want him dead.

In trouble, imprisoned in the darkness and stench that is the lowest part of his brother’s ship, can Tiola with her gift of Craft, and the aid of his loyal crew, save him?

Using all her skills Tiola must conjure up a wind to rescue her lover, but first she must brave the darkness of the ocean depths and confront the supernatural being, Tethys, the Spirit of the Sea, an elemental who will stop at nothing to claim Jesamiah Acorne’s soul and bones as a trophy.

Today my guest author is Terry Tyler and I want to thank her for blogging with me today. Here is a little about Terry and her book Full Circle.

What Challenges do you face writing romance in today’s society?

I’m not a writer of romances as such, but my books all feature love relationships as fairly central themes – because who-ends-up-with-who is always, for me, one of the most important bits of a book!  In my novels, I make my characters’ relationships as realistic as possible, because I like to write and to read about people who could actually exist, rather than idealistic heroes and heroines.  I think it’s important to relate characters’ relationships to today’s men and women; for instance, it is not very often, these days, that people fall in love with someone in their teens and stay with them forever – everyone has so many more opportunities and experiences now, so we carry on changing and are attracted to different people at different stages in our lives.  I like to write about people to whom my readers can really relate!

Terry Tyler’s first book on Amazon, You Wish, was the winner of the ‘Best Women’s Lit/Chick Lit’ category in the eFestival of Words 2013.

Terry lives in the north of England with her husband. She has six novels on Amazon, all of which she describes as the all-encompassing “contemporary fiction” because, despite the eFestival of Words win, she can’t work out what genre she writes in. If you like reading about love triangles, secret affairs, obsessions, addiction and family relationships, with a little bit of internet dating, social networking and reality TV thrown in, all with delightfully unguessable plot twists, then she’s probably the writer for you!

She has a blog on which she writes about anything she feels like, and also writes for the UK Arts Directory on a weekly basis, about self-publishing. Both blogs are widely read.

She will be publishing a collection of short stories later in the year, and is currently working on her seventh novel, which she is firmly convinced will be her best yet. Probably. Watch this space!

Day 10 of the Romancing September Across The World Blog Tour

Image

Welcome to Day 10 of the Romancing September Across The World Blog Tour. The question I put out to all of these authors was “What challenges do you face in writing romance in today’s society?”

Don’t forget to go over to Rosie Amber’s page and check out her page too. I’ll put the link at the bottom of this post.

Today my guest author is Annie Acorn and I want to thank her for blogging with me today. Here is a little about Annie and her book A Man For Susan.

What Challenges do you face writing romance in today’s society?

What an interesting question!  From my perspective, the biggest challenge isn’t in the writing of the romance.  I imagine writing a quality romance that will spark a readers’ imagination is much the same today as it was for Jane Austen or Georgette Heyer – two of the early greats.  One could make a case that there are more subgenres today, ranging from sweet to erotic, but once you’ve identified your genre, then all you have to do as an author is stay true to your choice and your readers’ expectations.  Oh, and write a really great story!

The real challenge for romance writers today is the marketing.  Major outlets for romances such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kobo and iTunes vary widely in the categories they offer to indies and publishers such as Annie Acorn Publishing LLC.  This can mean that while you as an author are secure in how you would categorize your work, it may prove to be difficult to denote this to possible readers as they search for your masterpiece on these venues’ websites.

Two other marketing challenges are also making it much harder to achieve real success with a romance, particularly a stand alone volume as opposed to a sequential work in a series.

The first is the sheer number of romances that are now available in the marketplace.  Here’s an example, when I published my cozy mystery Chocolate Can Kill, if you searched under Nook books/mysteries/women’s sleuths on the Barnes and Noble website, you would have found approximately 190 pages of volumes from which to choose.  When A Man for Susan was published as a romance just a little over a year later, a similar search would have provided a possible reader with over 1200 pages of volumes from which to choose.  The pages for Chocolate Can Kill had risen to 236.  The mystery genre is not tiny, but the romance genre is HUGE!

The second is the advent of free books for ereaders.  I have several friends who read romances almost exclusively.  They have individually shared with me that my Captain’s Point Stories romances are the ONLY ONES they have paid for since the advent of free offerings, and they did so only because they knew me personally.  True, they tell me, these free books often include erotica they don’t want, bad edits, poor storylines and fewer total pages, but they are willing to sort through the chaff to reach the wheat when the books are free.

As an author, I am deeply concerned about the trend towards free books.  Because I was eating, sleeping, indeed living in Captain’s Point in my head while writing A Man for Susan, Juliette and I were able to bring it to publication in a little over two months, thanks to her additions to the text and copyediting along as I wrote.  Still, even though I was running on 3-4 hours sleep per night much of time, it took the two of us a fair amount of time working all out in multiple directions to bring a quality, full-length volume to publication.
